Prospect reports for Jan. 6, 2015 – Jan 11, 2016

2015 Draft Picks:

Sebastian Aho, 2nd Round (#35 overall)

  • Trending: UP – Aho’s consistent play in the Finnish Men’s League (Liiga) should have been enough to garner high hopes in Caniac Nation. He was on track to make it to North America at the end of last season, but following his performance at the WJHC there is a chance he may be in a Hurricanes sweater as early as next season.
  • Last week: 1GP – 1AG-1A-2PTS, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 50.0% shooting (Liiga)
  • Kärpät won it’s only game with Aho in the lineup after his return from the WJHC.
  • This Season: 27GP – 11G-12A-23PTS, 2 PIM, 65 SOG, 16.9% shooting (Liiga)
    8GP – 3G-4A-7PTS, 2 PIM, 16 SOG, 18.7% shooting (CHL), 7GP – 4AG-8A-12PTS, 4 PIM, 16 SOG, 31.2% shooting (WJHC)
  • Next Game: Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Lukko Rauma (CHL Semi-Final), Thursday, January 14, 2016 vs. Tappara Tampere (Liiga)

Callum Booth, 4th Round (#93 overall)

  • Trending: UP – Despite a rough week following his Goaltender of the Month honors, I’m still high on Booth. The one thing I’ve wanted to see from him is consistency, and that’s what he’s done. He faces a tough challenge in the second half as Québec was a seller at the QMJHL trade deadline, moving their higher-end players to restock around Callum for next season.
  • Last Week: 2GP (2 Starts) – 0W-2L, .836%, 5.15GAA
  • This Season: 26GP (26 Starts) – 14W-9L-2OTL, .900%, 3.10 GAA, 2 SO
  • Next Game: Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Halifax, Mooseheads

Nicolas Roy, 4th Round (#96 overall)

  • Trending: UP – Roy is slowing putting up the numbers that made him the Top QMJHL Bantam draft pick years back. As he goes so does Chicoutimi Seguenees, which has slowly climbed to the middle of the league’s standings.
  • Last Week: 2GP – 3G-0A-0PTS, 0 PIM, 11 SOG, 27.2% shooting, 69.0% Faceoffs
  • Chicoutimi Seguenees went 1-0-1 with Roy recording a point in both games.
  • This Season: 36GP – 24G-23A-47PTS, 49 PIM, 134 shots, 17.9% shooting, 61.2% Faceoffs
  • Next Game: Saturday, Janurary 16, 2016 at Victoriaville, Tigres

Spencer Smallman, 5th Round (#138 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – Smallman had a hot start scoring, but slowed down in December. His stock may rise with a stellar postseason performance, as his game seems suited for multi-game series.
  • Last Week: 2GP – 0G-2A-2PTS, 4 PIM, 2 SOG, 0.0% shooting
  • Saint John Sea Dogs went 2-0, 1-0 when Smallman recorded a point.
  • This Season: 35GP – 8G-15A-23PTS, 43 PIM, 77 SOG, 10.4% shooting
  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2016 vs. Charlottetown, Islanders

Luke Stevens, 5th Round (#126 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – Putting up points in his final High School season before moving on to Yale. It’ll be tough to project Stevens until he plays a few NCAA seasons.
  • This Season: 12GP – 9G-12A-21PTS
  • Next Game: Wednesday, January 12, 2016 at Lawrence Academy

David Cotton, 6th Round (#169 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – Fairly consistent production for the Boston College bound Forward. Projected as a long-term prospect, there is room for optimism by his first (and only) USHL season, but like Stevens I’m waiting to see what Cotton can do in NCAA.
  • This Two Weeks: 2GP – 0G-1A-1PT, 0 PIM, 1 SOG, 0.0% shooting
  • Waterloo Black Hawks went 1-1, 0-1 when Cotton recorded a point.

  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2016 vs. Team USA (USHL)

Steven Lorentz, 7th Round (#186 overall)

  • Trending: UP – One point away from matching his OHL career-high in points, Lorentz has been a bright spot on a transitioning Peterborough team. Has the makings of a late-round success story.
  • Last Week: 3GP – 1G-1A-2PTS, 0 PIM, 13 SOG, 7.6% shooting
  • Peterborough Petes went 1-1-1, Losing in a shootout when Lorentz recorded points.
  • This Season: 41GP – 17G-19A-36PTS, 20 PIM, 106 SOG, 15.0% shooting
  • Next Game: Thursday, January 14, 2016 vs. Flint Firebirds

2014 Draft Picks:

Haydn Fleury, 1st Round (#7 overall)

  • Trending: UP – His offensive game is back this season, and while his shutdown role for Team Canada was a failed experiment at the WJHC, he’s progressing. It’ll be interesting to hear scouts evalute him after a Memorial Cup run this spring. An easy name to thrown in ‘fan trade rumors,’ let’s see Haydn play a few years in the pros before deciding he’s the prospect Ron Francis will need to move for offensive help.
  • Last Week: 3GP – 1G-3A-4PT, 0 PIM, 6 SOG,
  • Red Deer Rebels went 1-1-1 with Fleury in the recording a point in all three games.
  • Currently on a 5-game point streak.
  • Per the Rebels, Fleury left the game on 1/9 against the Vancouver Giants for percautionary reasons. They say he’s fine and should be in the line up on Wednesday.
  • This Season: 28GP – 8G-17A-25PTS, 29PIM (WHL)
  • Next Game: Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Moose Jaw Warriors

Alex Nedeljkovic, 2nd Round (#37 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – This is the goalie we expected to see following his rescue from Flint. A strong finish and a push to the OHL Championship with Niagara might earn Ned his second Goalie of the Year award. He’ll be playing [a lot] in the ECHL or AHL next season.
  • Last Two Week: 2GP (2 Starts) – 2W-0L, 1.49 GAA, .927%
  • This Season: 5GP (5 Starts) – 4W-1L, 1.59 GAA, .939% (NIA)
    19GP (19 Starts) – 9W-7L-1OTL-1SOL, 3.21 GAA, .907%, 1 SO (Flint)
    22GP (22 starts) 13W-8L-1OTL-1SOL, 2.87 GAA, .912% (OHL Totals), 6GP (6 Starts) – 4W-2L, 1.66 GAA, .942%, 1 SO (WJHC)
  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2015 at Ottawa 67’s

Roland McKeown, 2nd Round (#50 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – McKeown may open some eyes as Kingston has stocked up to make a deep run in the OHL, but I don’t expect an transformation in his ability until he’s being coached in the pros.
  • Last Week: 3GP – 0G-0A-0PTS, 4 PIM, 6shots, 0.0% shooting
  • Kingston Frontenacs went 2-1 in McKeown’s return to the lineup after the WJHC
  • This Season: 30GP – 6G-23A-29PTS, 31 PIM, 89 shots, 6.7% shooting
  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2016 vs. Flint Firebirds

Warren Foegele, 3rd Round (#67 overall)

  • Trending: DOWN – Despite playing on the hotest line in the OHL, his mid-season departure from New Hampshire is still concerning. He’s uptting up points as expected, so the gamble may have worked, but he is now on a short clock to sign a contract.
  • Last Week: 3GP – 1G-2A-3PTS, 4 PIM, 11 SOG, 9.0% shooting
  • Kingston Frontenacs went 2-1, 2-0 when Foegele recorded a point.
  • This Season: 26GP – 5G-21A-26PTS, 28 PIM, 48 shot, 10.4% shooting (OHL)
    5GP – 0G-1A-1PT, 6 PIM, 8 shots, 0% shooting (NCAA)
  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2016 vs. Flint Firebirds

Josh Wesley, 4th Round (#96 overall)

  • Trending: UP – Another player benifiting from a change of scenery. I was a bit concerned Wesley play might not earn a contract offer from the Organization, but I think he was stuck in a no-win situation in the transition from Plymouth to Flint. Pencil him in as the new Rasmus Rissanen or Michal Jordan next year.
  • Last Week: 3GP – 0G-2A-2PTS, 2 PIM, 5 SOG, 0.0% shooting
  • Niagara IceDogs went 3-0, 2-0 when Wesley recorded a point.

  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2015 at Ottawa 67’s

Lucas Wallmark, 4th Round (#97 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – Good performance in the Swedish Hockey League so far, but the jury will be out until he commits to come over to North America – AHL specifically.
  • Last Week: 2GP – 1G-0A-1PT, 0 PIM (SHL)
  • This Season: 28GP – 4G-18A-22PTS, 10 PIM (SHL), 5GP – 0G-0A-0PTS, 4 PIM (CHL), 3GP – 1G-0A-1PT, 2 PIM (Team Sweden / Channel One Cup)
  • Next Game: Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Skellefteå AIK

Clark Bishop, 5th Round (#127 overall)

  • Trending: DOWN – Injuries are becoming a concern for this two-way forward. Bishop is out of the lineup for the third time this season.
  • Bishop suffered a Lower Body Injury on 12/31, missed his team’s last four games.
  • This Season: 28GP – 11G-15A-26PTS, 56 PIM, 63 shots, 17.5% shooting, 51.4% faceoffs
  • Next Game: Saturday, January 16, 2016 vs Acadie-Bathurst, Titan

Kyle Jenkins, 7th Round (#187 overall)

  • Trending: NEUTRAL – Increased productions after a slow six-week start, but it’s coin-flip whether he’ll earn a contract in June or re-enter the draft.
  • Last Week: 3GP – 0G-1A-1PT, 0 PIM, 5 shots, 0.0% shooting.
  • Peterborough Petes went 1-1-1, 1-0 when Lorentz recorded a point.

  • Next Game: Thursday, January 14, 2016 vs. Flint Firebirds

No 2013 Draft Picks

2012 Draft Picks:

Collin Olson, 6th Round (#159 overall)

  • Trending: DOWN – A good start to his Western Michigan career is in the past. After spliting the net the first few weekends, Olson has been penciled in as the team’s backup to Lukas Hafner now that the WMU is in the middle of conference (NCHC) play. Collin will have he final season of eligibilty next year to conclude his roller coaster amateur career.
  • This Season: 9GP (7 start) – 2W-5L, 3.82 GAA, .886%
  • Next Game: Friday, January 15, 2016 at Denver Univ.

Brendan Collier, 7th Round (#189 overall)

  • Trending: DOWN – The move from Boston University to Northeastern may have benefited Collier, but the production from this third-year NCAA player doesn’t scream ‘Future Pro.’
  • Last Week: 2GP – 0G-2A-2PTS, 2PIM, 3 shots, 0.0% shooting
  • Northeastern went 2-0 last week.
  • This Season: 20GP – 3G-4A-7PTS, 8PIM, 14 shots, 21.4% shooting

Gregory Hofmann, 4th Round (#103 overall)
