With the #67 overall pick in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft the Carolina Hurricanes selected center Morgan Geekie from the Tri-City Americans from the Western Hockey League.

Morgan Geekie profile and history

Geekie is an overage player who was eligible for but not selected in the 2016 NHL Draft. After a massive leap from 25 points in 2015-16 up to 90 points in 2016-17, he climbed up the draft rankings and earned his third-round selection by the Hurricanes.

Geekie’s rapid rise makes many wonder if he is a player just hitting stride and beginning a significant upward trajectory or a player due to regress back to something closer to his 2015-16. But one thing is clear, the young center’s 2016-17 season was impressive enough that he went from off the draft radar for 2016 to being a third-round selection in 2017.

Geekie’s significant improvement in 2016-17 is credited to across the board improvement in skating, offensive play and defensive play. Despite his scoring outburst, he is still a strong player defensively and in face-off circle.
