Last week’s mailbag seemed to be fairly popular, and I look forward to the next planned one, which will in six weeks following the NHL Trade Deadline (Monday, February 29 @ 3pm EST – which I will be covering in some form or fashion).
Thankfully, you don’t have to wait that long as a few questions fell through the cracks and went unanswered. By change, both questions centered around everyone’s favorite prospect, Sebastian Aho.
@CanesProspects @CanesandCoffee What are the chances Aho plays in Raleigh next year?
— Greg Ruff (@RedbeardRuff) January 18, 2016
At the moment, I’ll set the odds at 40/60 he’ll be on the Hurricanes roster Opening Night 2016. There will be a open roster spot for Aho to claim.
Prior to the Gold Medal game in the 2016 World Junior Hockey Championship, I would have said Aho would being his North American debut in 2017. He has one more year on his Kärpät/Liiga contract (but he has an out clause). I had a feeling he would play out his contract before moving over. This would allow players on the Checkers the opportunity to claim open roster going into 2016-17.
During the Gold Medal Broadcast, TSN play-by-play announcer, said he spoke with Carolina GM Ron Francis who said “[Aho] might be in the NHL next year…” after being asked if Aho could play in the AHL next season.
His consistent play in the top Finnish league, maybe more than his WJHC performance, is a good indicator he’s ready to make the jump.
@CanesProspects @CanesandCoffee Do you think Aho will have any trouble transitioning to the North American game considering his size?
— David McGowan (@DStaffordM) January 18, 2016
I think Aho can transition to the NHL much like Jeff Skinner did in 2010. I’m not going to project the same production, but think he could find comfort in the line up immediately despite any perceived physical disadvantages.
He should be physically prepared for the NHL grind as he’s played in 48 games in 2015-16 so far when you combine Liiga, Champions Hockey League, and World Junior games. That’s close to the average games played for most NHL teams to date. Then playing one year in the Finnish professional league will help. Most Finnish teams have a hybrid ice size – 200 feet by 92.5 feet. That’s a nice size inbetween the NHL standard (200′ by 85′) and International Standard (200′ by 100′).
His size could be called into question with play skating against the boards. Aho typically likes skating in the middle of the offensive and neutral zones, but given Coach Bill Peters’ quick transtion and pressure styles in the neutral zone he’ll find himself against the walls more. His biggest transition will be trying to find separation from NHL defensemen in the slot area. Right now he’ll engage defensmen immediately when he enter high-danger scoring positions, but may not find the same space and time that he’s grown accustomed.
With another summer of training hopefully yielding increased muscle mass to his 5’11” frame, Aho shouldn’t stand out as a overly small player.
