For whatever reason, getting a Coffee Shop article up on Monday just has not happened of late. At least temporarily we are going to trying doing Tuesday instead.
The last couple coffee shop posts aimed at building a 2018-19 roster yielded some interesting results. You can see where the dust settled in the ‘stay or go’ polls for forwards HERE. And the seemingly harsher poll for goalies, defensemen and coaches which is HERE pretty aggressively votes to usher out the coaching staff and also some players.
Today’s Coffee Shop takes full advantage of the recent uptick in the team’s play and the AHL group that has been a feel-good catalyst for it.

Discussion questions
1) While admitting that the current scoring pace is not sustainable, which (or both) of Valentin Zykov and Warren Foegele is likely to stick at the NHL level and play a significant role going forward?
2) Which AHL players do you foresee playing in the NHL in 2018-19 and in which slots?
Go Canes!
1. I don’t think it is an either/or – Foegele and Zykov play different styles of hockey, both of which are currently very much in demand with the Canes. If I had to pick one it would be Zykov – a big-body playing strong and effectively in front of the net never goes out of style.
2. Recognizing that Peters’ thoughts on who he wants to play and his aversion for unproven players, I can see Zykov, Foegele, Necas, and Wallmark all having significant play with the Canes next year. Necas might very well start in Charlotte – if Vellucci is still the coach I think that might be an excellent transition for him to the North American game. I also think McKeown might see ice time, depending on the status (including location) of Faulk. McKeown, however, is also one of those pieces who might be involved in a trade now that he has given some indication he can play on NHL ice – the same with Wallmark, actually, given with Lindy, Staal, Aho, and Necas we are heavy with quality centers.
Good call. The question was worded poorly but not intended to be an either/or for Zykov and Foegele. Just added “or both” to make that a clearer choice.
Agree. Key word above is “location” used to describe Faulk, but that should also be extended to others. What we’re learning is that some of our depth is ripe and ready to play.
Showcasing them on the ice these last ten games and watching them perform is going to open up more opportunities for dealmaking this off-season.
1) I say they both stay. Zykov keeps playing with Aho and Teravainen and Foegle plays wing on 3rd or 4th line.
2) I think Necas makes team out of camp and probably plays right wing initially, either on Lindholm or Staal’s wing. Unless he proves ready to play center and bumps Lindholm back to the wing. A Skinner, Necas, Lindholm line could be interesting if Necas and Skinner can be responsible enough on D.
I also could see Wallmark sticking as the 4th line center.
I still think Zykov is a question mark. He does do well below the dots. After that…not so much. He looked out of place more than a few times tonight in a quick game. Fell down with the puck at least once near the defensive blue line. What he brings to the table is great, but he has downside as well. He needs to commit to working hard on his skating.
Foegele on the other hand has much less downside. Love how he goes to the net hard. To win battles regularly against big NHL players down low isn’t something the Canes have had in a long while. He is solid defensively as well. He has had a few “whoops” moments. Went for a big skate against Ottawa on Monday in the first. No idea what he was doing there. Stuff that should be coachable. I would say he has a big foot up on anyone else in Charlotte to make the team next year.
McKeown looks like he can play. Nothing overly impressive, but could play. Seems to panic a little, but that could be nerves. I think he gives the Canes the freedom to trade a D. I would still rather see a veteran defenseman in the lineup next year.
Wallmark can do everything Rask does for $3M less. Good luck unloading Rask.
If Necas develops as planned I expect he will start the season here, but may end up in Charlotte if he isn’t ready.
I think given their ELCs and cheap salary that both of Zykov and Voegele will play with the Canes next season.
Yes, both have had their learning moments, but that is to be expected for players coming up from the AHL. Hopefully the remaining games will help them realize where there are gaps (Zykov’s skating, Voegele’s positioning on the PK), and motivate them to address those over the offseason.
Both players show a lot of promise and come incredibly cheap for the 2018 19 lineup.
Walmark is definitely a strong potential to start the season with the parent club, especially if we can unload Rask’s contract.
I think we’ll change up our defense a bit over the offseson so it’s hard to say which pieces we keep and which we trade.
I suspect one of the AHL golies will win a call up but I am not sure any one of them will start the season in the triangle.
