The Thursday Coffee Shop will again take on a ‘future is bright’ theme that has made regular appearances this summer. Piggybacking on yesterday’s Daily Cup of Joe that shared thoughts the Carolina Hurricanes Traverse City Prospects Tourney, today’s polls and discussion questions present a forum for additional conversation about individual players, forward lines and defense pairings for the mid-September prospect showcase.

Discussion questions
1) Following up on the chatter that started in yesterday’s post, name your forward lines and defense pairings with bonus points awarded for themes and naming lines.
2) Who do you project to be the standouts and Hurricanes most valuable player from the tourney?
3) With the team’s history of players (Josef Vasicek, Victor Rask, etc.) using fall prospect tourneys as a spring board to winning an NHL roster spot ahead of schedule, could we similarly see a player or two (maybe beyond Haydn Fleury is much less of a dark horse) from Traverse City still in Raleigh for opening night?
Go Canes!
1. ?
2. Hayden Fleury. He’s the “overripe” player. He needs to stand out.
3. With the depth we’re building, I’d expect there will be a t least one slot open for this year’s Vasicek.
At the risk of repeating myself:
1) Top Prospect line: Kuokkanen/Necas/Gauthier
Hustle line: Foegele/Smallman/Mattheos
Big guys: Lorentz/Roy/Geekie
Leading scorers: Elynuik/Poturalski/Schilkey
D pairings: Fleury/McKeown, Bean/Wesley, Carroll/Thilander, De Jong/Hollowell
2) Standouts: Fleury, Roy, Kuokkanen, Necas. MVP: Roy
3) I think Roy is the most logical. I am not convinced that Jooris is a sure thing–more like an inexpensive addition that gives the team options. He can take draws, play center or right wing, kill penalties. Roy can do those things and was by far the biggest point producer among the juniors, if he performs well in the tournament, then he will hang around as 4th line RW.
Bonus: The Hockey News just completed 20/20 vision. I think the Canes look like this in October 2020:
TT/Aho/Necas
Kuokkanen/Staal/Gauthier
Skinner/Roy/Lindholm
Foegele/Kruger/Mattheos or Smallman
Slavin/Fleury
Bean/Pesce
Hanifin/Faulk
To be honest I don’t know what happens to Risk, but there are only so many spots. One of LHD will probably flip sides and I think Fleury is most likely. I also see the organization re-signing Kruger for 3-4 years around 2.25M per.
I would question The Hockey News 20/20 article because not only is Rask missing but what happened to Williams and Stempniak?
I think Williams and Stempniak’s contracts will be up by October 2020. I could be wrong but after this contract I don’t see GMRF extending or resigning Williams. Not sure on Rask unless the thought is the others will push him out of a spot.
2. Foegele, Kuokkanen, Necas, and MVP FLEURY!
3. None
