The Carolina Hurricanes 2017 prospect camp kicked off on Wednesday and presented the first opportunity to see the newest set of Canes prospects in Raleigh. I know some are grumbling about the fact the fact that Francis actually used all eight picks that he had entering the draft (he did use two in trade prior to the draft), but there is a positive in that the future continues to look brighter by the day.
If you missed my article went up early morning/late night on Thursday, my notes from the first day of prospect camp are HERE.
I think what I am going to do is put up a separate Coffee Shop post either later on Thursday or otherwise Friday for comments on the start of NHL free agent hunting season on Saturday, so that we do not have two completely different sets of conversations jumbled together.
The Thursday Coffee Shop will focus on the Hurricanes’ prospect pool.
Carolina Hurricanes prospects polls
Please remember to click ‘vote’ after each individual response.
Some of the polls sort of lean toward evaluations of Wednesday’s practice (obviously everyone was not able to attend), but this is not intended to be a scientific evaluation, so please feel to vote based on your impressions from my other other people’s evaluations or just your general opinion. The goal, as always, is enthusiastic conversation, not professionally qualified opinions.
Discussion questions
1) For those who attended the first prospect camp practice on Wednesday, please share one or two (or more) observations?
2) Especially for the new players, who do they remind you of?
3) Share your 2 cents on one of the big guns (i.e. Jake Bean, Julien Gauthier, Nicolas Roy, Martin Necas, etc.)
4) Or just talk about anything else related to the Hurricanes prospect pool or prospect camp this week.
Go Canes!
1) Necas is the real deal. It will not be long before he is at the NHL level. Geekie was very impressive and Foegele could grab one of the spots this year.
2)No opinion
3) Bean was the most impressive defensive guy. Necas looked seriously good. I kind of thought Roy would stand out but so far I did nto notice him that much.
4) I know some were upset about us using our 8 draft picks but you have to have other teams who want to trade. If they want unreal demands then you walk and I think that is what we did. I would have loved to use those picks for a good forward but it was not in the cards. I am very sure RF was trying. Hopefully we do something over the summer as we do still have a hole offensively at this point.
Since I don’t attend I will add my observations based on numbers. Glad to see folks who were there are impressed by Lorentz. Because his production seems to increase in playoffs and tournaments going back to midgets. With his size it would be terrific if he made it as a seventh rounder and became a clutch player.
I’m happy to hear Necas has impressed a few people, already! I’ve seen a couple of guys say they like Bean, so I’m hoping my last impression of him will change… I didn’t see the hockey sense I was looking for…?
I’m curious about the new Dmen, and what folks think?
I won’t be able to make it to the Arena, so I’m relying on ya’all to fill me in!!
Foegele looked real good to me in the junior tournaments, and could be a pleasant surprise HERE…PRETTY SOON, IMO!
Bean: Looked like he has filled out physically from last year and has improved his skating backwards (converting from forward to backward) a great deal. His defensive game was head and shoulders over what I saw last year.
Necas: He’s going to be an NHLer for sure. Looked like a top 10 draft pick should look. He looks much bigger than I thought he would be.
Booth: Huge goalie that moves quickly and absorbs the puck well. Give him two more years and he will be a real candidate for an NHL roster spot.
Geekie: Will be an NHL player in about three years. Wicked shot and moves well and has size (hey they all were big).
Roy: Did everything well and appeared to have filled out physically so even amongst all the height on the ice, he appeared big. Seemed more confident and clean in his puck handling than most of the other forwards.
Overall: Three of 29 players were less than 6 feet tall (2 at 5’10” and 1 at 5’11”) and most over 190 pounds. No apparent loss of speed or mobility do to size of players. I was expecting more out of Gauthier and Koukkanen, but they weren’t necessarily bad. Koukkanen did have some outstanding moments and looks to me to be a real candidate for a roster spot in a year or two. I just expected them to be head and shoulders above most of the other forwards.
