The Thursday Coffee Shop today continues on the theme of considering the Hurricanes 2017-18 roster for building a winning team for the 2018-19 season. It is part 2 for yesterday’s version that had simple ‘stay or go’ polls and more detailed discussions for the Hurricanes forwards.
Please remember to click ‘vote’ before each individual poll response.

Go Canes!
There is an excellent 13-minute interview that Adam Gold, not my favorite BTW, had with Waddell at the Oilers game. Darling is coming back next season but the team will be looking for a new goalie and may well go into training camp with 3 goalies competing for 2 spots (inference that Ned isn’t ready – and I don’t think he is either). And the idea of having Darling start in Charlotte is not out of mind.
Waddell for GM? Hmm…maybe he’s the Don Nelson Tom Dundon needs.
Can you imagine if we had the $8M+ salary available for the next 4 years that we locked in for Darling and Rask? I would imagine a 4 year $8M contract would entice a pretty good player to Raleigh.
I think it might be time to stop blaming goalie coaches for the problems in net. I don’t see a good reason to remove Mike Bales after his FIRST season in the organization. The guy played a role helping Fleury and Matt Murray – I think based on his track record he is deserving of another opportunity rather than once again making a goalie coach change…
I think this organization already has a bottom half of the league reputation as a place to “work”, and I think if this team continues with staff turnover it is only going to dig that hole deeper.
I want to see Tom Dundon do what he said – ADD. This organization needs more personnel to supplement the existing staff. When it comes to the three behind the bench coaches I think the only one who is his track record has warranted a firing (re-assignment) is Rod Brind’Amour.
Steve Smith has capably led the penalty kill over the years and I would say the defensive zone transition is among the best aspects of the team. With that said – I would like to see more development from the defensemen as well as improved defending without the puck.
Bill Peters has led a top 10 possession team the last couple of seasons along with a team that consistently leads the league in neutral zone takeaways and takeaways in general. After watching the Canes for so many years there is no question in my mind despite the frustrating season that has unfolded – I have never seen a Canes team with a more established and frustrating to play against system than my time watching Peters coach this group. He has been selected to coach the Canadians at the world championship and I think he has the respect of many coaches in the league – I simply do not think he is the problem. It is his first head coaching gig and everyone needs to learn – and perhaps he needs to be let go so that he can inevitably become a better coach. However I think when you have a good coach you commit to them and let THEM develop just as you would a player. Think of it like this – Bill Peters is a championship winning assistant coach and a developing head coach. Given some more time, like his players, he can also get better. His detail orientation and his system provide me optimism that he can become an elite head coach and I don’t think you give up on him.
To make an analogy – many years ago as a Toronto Raptors fan I and numerous fans called for the firing of Dwayne Casey – a championship winning assistant and unproven head coach. Instead – the organization gave him trust and time to develop as a coach and to develop relationships with his players. Without any ELITE talent in a sport that needs elite talent even more than hockey he has truly developed and become an elite head coach and developed great chemistry with his players. I can happily say as a Raptors fan – we were wrong. I have that feeling if you asked other teams in the league what was wrong in Carolina they’d lastly say Bill Peters.
This team will see a new GM this summer, and hopefully a bunch of new players. However I am hoping for new staff in added roles and to see the organization give many of these guys another shot. I know Bill can be sarcastic and seem like he has nothing good to say during media scrums – but I trust him as a coach. Give him better players.
