With the Hurricanes still sputtering coming out of the bye week now at 0-2-1 and the trade deadline now just under 1 week away, the Coffee Shop for Thursday will start the wheeling, dealing and horse trading a bit early, so that no one shows up next week and claims to have predicted an out of the blue trade without documenting for Canes and Coffee bragging rights.

Discussion questions
1) Who has outlandish ideas for deals that Francis pulls off before next Wednesday and needs to make sure he/she documents it for proof? This is the place. 🙂
2) What are your thoughts on Phil Di Giuseppe 2.0 after a strong run in Charlotte? He has an assist and has collected a bunch of shots through 2 games. Is he just another AHL/NHL fringe player or is he capable of more? Same question for Brock McGinn and Derek Ryan who have now had long runs in the NHL lineup. Are any of these 3 players capable of being more than depth?
3) Would you consider including Lee Stempniak in the list of players who you would move if the return was good? (I shared my thoughts on him as a trade deadline wild card in part 1 of my trade deadline preview , so feel free to comment before or after you read my thoughts.)
Go Canes!
1) Cam Ward ends up in Pittsburgh–Fleury comes to the Canes
2) All three are fringe players–they makes the Checkers better but not the Canes
3) Everyone should be tradeable for the right price
northof49 has number 1 Ward for Fleury right on.
1) I would love to see Ward for Fleury. We simply do not have an answer looking forward. I heard many singing the praises of Ned being the next guy but when I watched Traverse City, he was letting a lot in. Its only because the guys were scoring that we did well. Pre-season he was good for 2 goals a period. I have not seen the magic. He struggled with the checkers also. Why do we thing he is the future??? Open to comments. Booth was better IMO.
2) Derek Ryan – love the story but just not excelling. PDG I believe still can make it. McGinn is a thumper, I would not give up on him yet.
3) Lee Stempniak, no way you trade him. He is proven and at a good price. He does add value, I doubt you would ever get anything back as good for the price or draft picks. You do not get many 40-50 point guys for 2.5M. He is also Vegas protection.
We still need Vegas protection on the defense. Absolutely Keep Stalberg!!!!! Fastest guy on the team, why we do not put him in the top 9 is beyond me? Give him some real line mates.
Go get bishop or Fleury, make a splash to give us something to potentially be excited about OR for the 2nd time since 1997, I am not going to be a season ticket holder.
Keep Stalberg!!!!!
ENOUGH REBUILD, do something now, change the team now. Ge rid of the following:
Derek Ryan – no more than AHL player
Ryan Murphy – waste of top 12 pick in 1st round
Dahlbeck
Phil D., no more than an AHL player
McClement – get something for him
Rask – trade him NOW, no better than a 3rd line center
Teuvo – Start thinking about trading him
Ward and Lack – ge Cris of both – by the way, Ward’s number should never go in rafters.
Trade Alex Ned, this kid is not the goslie of future for us.
Get Bishop or Fleury – I’m Okay with this.
Keep Stalberg. You bet.
Ryan – Agree but I would not use “get rid” for any player. Use “trade” or something like that unless the player has been a malcontent.
Murphy – How can I argue. You have all the facts on your side.
Phil DiG – Disagree with you but only based on small sample to make a judgment.
McClement – I’ll leave this up to RF to decide whether the skills he brings cannot be replicated by a player who has a little more offensive upside. You are probably right though.
RASK – Disagree. His value right now is at its lowest. Wait till next preseason to see what we have.
Teuvo – I would keep.
Ward – I agree.
Alex Ned – Don’t know enough to disagree, but have read elswhere that Atschuller is better prospect.
Disclaimer: No one ever said I was any hockey “guru”, so listen to me at your own peril. In fact, my two best hockey buddies have stopped listening to me at least two seasons ago and affectionately refer to my ideas as cr…p.
You’re incredibly shortsighted. I hate this comment an unreal amount. Simply for the Ned and Teuvo statements. Hot garbage. Teuvo is 21 years old. Years away from his prime. Ned has been excellent since his NHL debut. He is very much the goalie of the future for us.
1.) Hainsey and Ward to any team that needs a defensive rental and will otherwise lose a very good goalie at the expansion draft. (Ex: Fleury in Pittsburgh would work but, he would have to give up his NTC, which seems unlikely.)
2.) Fourth liners at best
3.) One of our major problems each October is there is so much line up turnover and so little preseason time to learn Peters system. This adds significantly to the team’s perennial slow starts. (It’s not the road trip!) Trading Stempniak to get something like Stempniak worsens the learning curve in October for the team and lessens my interest in moving him.
I can buy your ideas. Think they are right on point. Mine vary a little (see below), but I could live with yours.
1) Ward at 3.3 million per year with one year remaining on his contract to Pittsburgh for Fleury at 5.5 million per year with 2 or 3 years left on his contract. This gives Rutherford a suitable backup for the playoffs and gives him cap room for other moves.
1) Hainsey to Pittsburgh for prospect (currently in AHL) or draft pick (3rd round). This fills a need for Pittsburgh and is also wishful thinking by me as I would like Hainsey get a shot at the Cup.
2) DiG has the makings of a solid third or fourth line forward. He brings bite to his game and can score at a 15 goals per season rate IMO. McGinn keep only if he is going to move his game nearer to the net and not continue to play on the perimeter. Ryan seems to me to have fallen off because of his size. He is getting battered on the ice and has no covering force to help him. He is AHL depth forward available in an emergency. Only trade him if HE wants to go because he wants a shot at the playoffs and RF can get something of value for him. Like Hainsey, if a player is not in our LONGTERM plans (I hope long term comes to a quick end next year) then treat him right and reward him for the great effort he brought to the Canes this year.
3) Stempniak gives the young forwards some veteran presence on the team. Keep him as a third line player as we have enough other needs which trading Stepniak will not solve. This guy comes to play every night and is a capable third line player.
Put Stepniak’s name before “Only trade him if…” This comment does not apply to Ryan.
