With the holidays end of year approaching, we are continuing our combination holiday sale/year end fundraiser. If you are a regular reader of Canes and Coffee and appreciate what we do, please consider a Canes and Coffee cup (if you want one) or otherwise a small $5-10 donation to help fund our mission at Canes and Coffee to provide local, daily coverage of our hockey team.
$18.75 in state or $17.50 out of state (sales tax difference) nets you a coffee cup. Small, simple donations are also appreciated.
It’s as simple as making a credit card or PayPal contribution by clicking on the PayPal link HERE and being sure to include your mailing address if you order a coffee cup.
With the busy holiday season upon us and most people working on gift lists and shopping, the Thursday Coffee Shop will take on a mostly lighthearted holiday shopping theme.

Discussion questions
1) On the holiday gift topic, what is the coolest Carolina Hurricanes present that you have ever received?
2) Who owns something really cool from the 2002, 2006 or 2009 Stanley Cup playoff runs?
3) Back on the ice, who has comments and/or discussion points for the group to bandy around today?
Go Canes!
I leave the discussion questions this time but shortly comment the only vote I cast: the first poll question. I voted for the option of a 3 game winning streak at home. It melted my heart as I noticed today Sebastian’s elder brother Samuli posting a pic at the airpoirt heading eventually to be over there for Xmas (In Raleigh). I also could imagine some other players’ family members would visit. It is a nice stretch of home games for every hockey family to see. So besides fans, this is why I wish great plays and preferably wins, too 🙂
1. Actually, I don’t get many Canes gifts from others. Everything I want I get for myself. Reversing it to gifts given, my daughter – amongst other Hurricanes-themed gifts – is getting a used, signed Hanifin stick from me.
2. I have a team-signed visor from the 2006 SC team. It was given to me by a woman hoping to impress me and win her way into my heart. Alas for her, my heart was not to be bought by mere autographs alone. 🙂
3.
A. Very cool to hear from katrii that Aho’s brother is coming in from Finland for the holidays. And thank you, katrii, for reminding me of his nickname in Finland. I met him last January at a Canes event and I asked him whether he preferred being called “Sepe” or “Seabass” (as Peters was doing”. He laughed and said everyone on the team calls him “Fishy”.
B. On a more serious note, one thing I haven’t and will throw it out for future thoughts. Jeff Skinner’s contract expires at the end of next season. What are the odds of him re-signing? I have been pondering that point as the team has struggled so far this season.
1. A way to a man’s heart can easily be hockey tickets. This year going to road games in Montreal and Ottawa. Next year I’m sure whatever games I attend will be the best gifts. Keeps getting better!
2. I was at Game 7 of the finals and later spent the entire night at the airport waiting for my early morning flight back to New England. Before boarding, I noticed the morning papers had just arrived and so I bought one figuring to be just reading material. That turned out to be my best souvenir. That front page of the News & Observer sits framed in my hockey cave to this day.
(I also had bought a Commodore bath robe but somehow lost it a few years later!)
3. Out of topics right now, but let’s beat Buffalo tomorrow and start a decent streak.
1. I don’t have much canes apparel, I don’t really collect that kind of stuff, memories are good enough. My 10-year-old who is in the jr. program got a stick donated by Justin Faulk, nice gesture!
2. (see 1). the first time I watched hockey was the epic Edm 2006 series. My wife and I had just moved in together (she lived in Canada when we met) and I remember watching game 7 in a bar in Charleston, SC. That was fun!
3. I thik the Canes should consider pitching for Evander Kane (so does one of the Hockeybuzz bloggers). Buffalo is trying to offload him (his contract is up in the spring and reportly hed loved playing in the southeast). If we can swap out Faulk for Kane or similar, that is something I’d totally be excited about.
The kid has had his share of off-ice issues, but he’s got mad talent and he is a pure scorer.
If he works out well we can sign him to a another contract. If not, we don’t have to commit long-term. Just have him swap jerseys tomorrow, he knows the Buf goalies inside out and could help us get those much needed 2 points in that game.
Interesting side story on the Cam Ward first win/start option…
For the 2005-06 season, each team wore special jerseys with a patch for their home opener. Those jerseys were auctioned off for charity (can’t remember for sure, but I think it might have been Hockey Fights Cancer). For most players, it’s just a chance to buy a game-worn jersey usually for a pretty steep price. But I remember thinking at the time, that the Ward jersey could truly be one of a kind/something special since it was his first start and also his first win and with pretty cool circumstances with the shootout win against the Pens that saw him stop Crosby and Lemieux.
I remember checking the price, and the day of it was only bid up to $900 or something like that. I am not one to buy pricey game-worn stuff (I own exactly none of it), but I remember telling my wife that that jersey might actually be worth it for $1000-1200 because of its unique circumstances, but I never bid. To this day, I wonder where that jersey ended up.
1) My Coolest Carolina Hurricanes Christmas present was my Semin jersey. It now says Lindholm.
2) We went to all the 2006 Stanley cup playoff games. At those games they gave out towels. My wife took a bunch of them and stitched them together like a quilt, with backing and boarders and made a blanket out of it. We have a few signatures on it. It is very unique and works well.
3) For discussion points, will RF ever make a trade or will he stay the course?
1.I don’t get a lot of Canes stuff for the holidays. A wins streak would be nice, at least so they don’t add to the Grievances on next weeks’s game on Festivus.
2. They change out the glass at each end of the rink every two years and sell it on Craigslist. I bought a door glass in 2007, and have it in my apartment, with a poster of the Championship picture behind it.
3. For all those who were unhappy we didn’t trade for Duchesne last season, did you change your mind seeing we would have traded Hanafin, a 1st (Necas) , and a prospect for essentially Derek Ryan 2.0?
