Since the last Coffee Shop post after the trade deadline, the Carolina Hurricanes and the team’s fan base have endured another bout of adversity. First, Bill Peters verbally chucked Eddie Lack under the proverbial bus on Friday. Then the team proceeded to lose 3-1 on Monday with Cam Ward in net. Then the team rebounded on Sunday to break a 5-game losing streak with Eddie Lack having a strong game in net.
Today’s Coffee Shop offers an element of sorting out, venting and/or discussing the Lack/Peters situation and also lighter topics looking forward to building the 2017-18 roster. After you vote, take a look at my preliminary guess for the 2017-18 Carolina Hurricanes roster in today’s Daily Cup of Joe.

Carolina Hurricanes discussion questions
What are your thoughts on Bill Peters’ comments on Eddie Lack on Friday? Is it just completely inappropriate and unprofessional as some have suggested? Is the whole thing blown out of proportion because the public outburst seems out of character for Bill Peters? If it sparks Eddie Lack to find a higher gear is it justified? And so on…
Right now, which players are making the best cases for a larger role in 2017-18?
Go Canes!
Bill’s outburst was inappropriate and unprofessional only in the fact that he did it out in public with a reporter IMO. What he said should have been done in the same manner, but behind closed doors with Lack. Otherwise, I write if off as something that was unfortunate to occur (I don’t like Mike Keenan tactics), but something that is over and done with and let’s move on. Bill’s an excellent coach IMO and just lost it. I can understand his frustration with how things have gone in the last 10-15 games and while no approving of his style in this case, it doesn’t lessen the good job he has done bringing this team along this year.
My comment in the other article covered it better… short version.. is Men’s league…CAN’T DEAL WITH IT…FIND NEW WORK!
Mostly agree with RedRyder’s thoughts on Peters’ outburst.
I think the public venue was wrong especially for how harsh he was, but I also do not see this as something that the team cannot move past if the private conversations that follow are handled right.
Agreed for the most part. I also believe Lack’s goofy persona is easier to accept when things are going well. When he’s stinking up the joint, well it’s a bit tougher to swallow from a coach’s standpoint. I watched the clip and it looked to me like Peters didn’t want to go quite as far as he did but at some point he said **** it, we need something to create a spark so here we go. He probably does regret – a little – ripping a player in public but it’s not like we’re looking at Patrick Roy walking off into the sunset. **** em. Make a save. And he did….multiple saves on Sunday so good for him to step up. Now keep it going.
Which players are making a case for a bigger role next year. My selections are DiGuiseppe and Dahlback. DiGuiseppe as a full time 4th line wing who brings grit and some offense to that line also. Dahlback as a fixture as a regular 5-6 defenseman because slots 1 through 4 are covered with Slavin, Pesce, Hanafin, and Faulk. My longshot selection (assuming you don’t consider my other picks as long shots) is Murphy. With the regular play he is getting I see his game picking up and he just might be an excellent 5-6 defenseman in this league. One other comment, I like McClement’s play this year. His speed has picked up and he is excellent in the role he plays on this team.
Agree with PDG, and one, two out of WALLMARK, ZYKOV, POTURALSKI!
though this team is starving for a big upgrade at forward…
RF doesn’t seem to have a clue that WE HAVEN’T ANYONE IN OUR SYSTEM WHO FITS THAT DESCRIPTION!
Actually, puckgod, Francis attended a Checkers game some time in June and observed to shake his head and overheard to say, “there will be changes here next year”. He knows there are deficiencies.
Two things:
(1)Peters and Lack talked at the airport on Saturday – apparently a very healthy talk for both of them.
(2) Peters said yesterday that his comments were “not [his] proudest moment”.
So Peters knows he was out of line, probably understandably, and admitted it in public and has squared things with Eddie. Let’s let the two men, having worked it out, go forward. Cool?
I think this is important. A player or coach who is passionate getting frustrated and letting loose is not a new thing. Significant is also the conversations that happen afterward and how everyone moves forward.
Only BP will ever know if his comments were intentional or not. Only BP knows if comments meant to be intentional went further than intended. Only Lack and BP know if comments made privately had been ineffective in changing the behavior Lack clearly needed to change. Could Peters have been frustrated by Lack? You bet. Could Lack be a quirky, easy going, low key guy who seems hard to motivate by conventional means? Maybe to likely. The unanswered question is will it be effective long term? Holding Arizona to one goal in one game is not an answer to that question.
Two more questions. Has BP spoken with Ward about his sub-par net play, or does he still get an organizational pass because of 2006? Has anyone told Marcoux that his job is to make the goalies better, not worse (see Khudobin’s and Lack’s stats prior to and after being coached by Marcoux)? Having one goalie tank after having a good year sometimes happens, but two is either really bad luck or poor coaching.
I don’t have a problem with a coach being hard on underperforming players in the media. One game doesn’t make a trend, and it was against a non-quality opponent, but Eddie Lack was better in his next game, so maybe he got the message.
One other angle not discussed: maybe BP was really sending the message to RF about the need to upgrade talent at this position. BP is going to wind up feeling the heat after three playoff “misses” even though I lump his body of work into the category of “turning lemons into lemonade.” Our rosters have improved from 2014-15, but we’re really not there yet. We’ve seen him win with better rosters in other tournaments so he can clearly coach. RF: let’s give him better talent to work with.
I also have big questions about Marcoux.
I also have big questions about Marcoux. I have not seen him improve anything. It is more like the other way. I was indifferent about Peter’s blow-up. It is certainly is better then Muller’s, “We need to learn from this”. At least there was passion.
I also have big questions about Marcoux.
