With the roster cut to 33 today, the tryout is set for the couple open spots in the Canes 2015-16 opening night roster. If the team is healthy, math suggests that the defensemen are competing for 2 spots and the forwards 1. Injuries will inevitably create another opening or 2, if not for opening night for later.
Who wins the 3 open spots?
If you first assume that the 5 defensemen on 1-way contracts (Faulk, Hainsey, Wisniewski, Liles, Jordan) win opening night roster spots, who wins the remaining 2 spots?

If you first assume that 12 forwards (EStaal, JStaal, Lindholm, Skinner, Rask, Gerbe, Nestrasil, Nash, Terry, McClement, Malone, Versteeg) make the opening night roster, who wins 1 remaining spot?

1st cut not last cut…AND the lists you provide are not FINAL,
NORDSTROM, And TOLCHINSKY, Fleury, SlaVin make 1st cut!
I don’t think they keep Murphy on the big club as the #7 defenseman. Either he’ll displace somebody or he’ll go to Charlotte to play big minutes in all situations. I think Hanifin is as good as on the NHL roster. Finally, I think they give Fleury his 9 games and then make a determination. After that, there’s at least as good of a chance that the Canes run with 6 blueliners unless an injury strikes. Failing that, I still think that Biega is the 1st call up (unless Murphy develops overnight). And the battle then is between Liles/Jordan/Biega. But I’ve been wrong before…
Also, I think the 13th forward is likely to be Woods over Ryan, unless Derek Ryan can displace a top 9 forward (or even top 6). He’s not made for our 4th line, even in Bill Peters’ higher minute system. So I think, if we carry 13, Woods or at the outside Di Giuseppe steps into that role. Then there’s an intersting dynamic between one of those two and Gerbe/Malone. A true battle would ensue with skill ultimately winning out. Good times….
