Jeremy Helvig 2016-17 season capsule

Jeremy Helvig was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes as an overage player in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL draft. The 6-4 goalie with NHL size went undrafted after a challenging 2014-15 season but impressed with a surge in the second half of the 2015-16 season. Helvig has been a consistent work horse for Kingston during the 2016-17 season, though his numbers have dipped a bit. After closing out the 2015-16 season strong with a stellar 2.13 goals against average and .929 save percentage, in 2016-17 he sports a .907 save percentage and 2.72 goals against average heading into the OHL playoffs.

Canes and Coffee: How would you summarize and describe Jeremy Helvig’s play in 2016-17 thus far?

Peter Harling: Helvig has been a workhorse for the Frontenacs in his post draft season as the incumbent starting goalie.He has been very consistent all season long and provided the Fronts with steady, solid goaltending.

Canes and Coffee: Comparing Jeremy Helvig from the 2015-16 season to the current season, is there anything that jumps out at you as significantly improved or different?

Peter Harling: The biggest difference between last year and this is the fact he has played much more, and carried the load well. Last year Helvig shared time with Lucas Peressini who started the year as the Fronts starter and defending OHL goalie of the year. Helvig eventually moved from backup, to splitting starts to the starter. This year, it has been Helvig all year as the starter, and he has managed the work load well as he is a well conditioned athlete.

Canes and Coffee: What areas do you see for necessary improvement as Jeremy Helvig continues to develop his game and ready it for the NHL down the road?

Peter Harling: One area of development for Helvig could be his rebound control. He has a tendency to give up second, and third chances, however this has improved since last year.

Canes and Coffee: Jeremy Helvig will have had a successful second half of the 2016-17 season and playoffs in terms of helping the Frontenacs and also preparing for the NHL if he _______________.

Peter Harling: …Can steal some games in the playoffs for Kingston and help the win more than one round in the OHL playoffs.
