Just as Tuomo Ruutu (and too few Hurricanes players since) used to block the entirety of the goalie when screening on a point shot, the moon will completely block the sun not too far from Raleigh. Due largely to lack of much for hockey news in mid-August, this week’s Sunday Canes Chronicle is the eclipse edition.

Despite the slow week and quiet on the ownership front, we did manage to collect a batch of articles to help Canes fans get through another slow hockey day in August.

Edmonton trade rumors again – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

From the category of ‘rumors that will not die’, Lyle Richardson at Spector’s Hockey puzzle-pieced together comments from Chiarelli in the Edmonton newspapers and an article from Chip Alexander from the News & Observer to make yet another try to deal Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the Hurricanes.

Top 25 OHL prospects – Two Hurricanes make honorable mentions

From the category of ‘almosts’, Brock Otten at OHL Prospects has two Hurricanes prospects listed as honorable mentions for his top 25 OHL prospect list. (Scroll to August 18, 2017 if you find this later.)

Alternate reality – The Sergei Federov offer sheet

From the category of ‘what ifs’, Derek Roessler and Mike Flanagan from Section 328 made a guest appearance at Yahoo!’s Puck Daddy blog and rewrote history for if the offer sheet for Sergei Federov had brought him to Raleigh in 1998.

No pressure – Scott Darling

From the category of ‘no pressure, Adam Gretz named new netminder Scott Darling as a key to the Hurricanes 2017-18 season as part of Carolina Hurricanes day at NBC Sports.

Also under pressure – Bill Peters

Also part of Carolina Hurricanes day at NBC Sports, Adam Gretz suggests that Coach Bill Peters will be under some pressure to get results in 2017-18. Especially interesting to me was how few coaches had managed to stay behind the bench for three consecutive non-playoff seasons.

Only 12 more days until September. Hockey is near!

Go Canes!
