Go Canes!
No surprise that Francis is dominating. Whitney over Wesley (so far) is a mild surprise, but understandable given the Wizard’s popularity with fans and his penchant for scoring timely goals (a much more visible/memorable role than a stay-at-home defenseman). No real surprise with Brind’Amour currently winning over Williams either. (Final bracket will probably be Francis vs. Brind’Amour.) Faulk with the edge on Staal probably speaks to growing fan discontent with the current team in that Staal is the face of the franchise and has been underperforming on the ice for much of recent history, whereas Faulk has at least been getting better with time.
I think Faulk’s deep run is interesting commentary on where the Canes fan base is right now. Faulk has never even played a playoff game in a Hurricanes uniform (through no fault of his own), yet he is leading a player who I would rate either 3rd or 4th overall in franchise history in Eric Staal.
I have not surveyed people to understand why but my feeling is that it is people looking forward not backward and maybe also a touch of people wanting change after a run of playoff misses.
