This week’s collection of Carolina Hurricanes news from around the internet says goodbye to 1 of hockey’s all-time greats, looks at another seemingly fabricated Canes rumor and revisits Cam Ward after comments from Hurricanes GM Ron Francis this week.
Gordie Howe
On Friday, hockey legend Gordie Howe passed away. Here are a couple good articles on the all-time great.
TSN.ca offers a pretty detailed biography type article on Gordie Howe’s career.
Old school hockey photos are the absolute best. Here is a set from Sports Illustrated’s archives.
Cam Ward
This week in his media availability, Ron Francis seemed to leave the door cracked open for a Cam Ward return and called him a top 5 goalie for the second half (ish) of the season.
Summer of rumor discontent
Best guess is that he wrote this during 1 of the crazy rain delays for the NC State baseball games when he had a bunch of free time on his hands. There is some decent factual information and history on the Karmanos situation before it devolves into him defending his objectivity covering the team and then goes full downpour real late at night tossing around trade ideas that could include Justin Faulk, Olli Maatta, Matt Murray and Evgeni Malkin. Hard to say exactly how much rain it takes to just steal Sidney Crosby in the process.
Go Canes!
If I was Francis, I’d not burn bridges with Ward, just in case he can’t do a Draft Day deal for someone like Anderson or Fleury. And as far as the Faulk trade and dissatisfaction thing, 1. Disaffected players don’t sign 5 year extension. 2. And if we do a “Cocoa Puffs” trade with Justin ,let’s do one in our favor: Faulk, the rights to Michael Jordan, the 13th and 22nd for the Oilers #4 and Connor McDavid.
I wouldn’t burn that Ward bridge…I’d NUKE it! One good goalie last year, and we’d been in the p/os… if we replay that fiasco, I’ll be livid!
I don’t think Faulk is untradeable. He’s very, very good but certainly not in the class of the real defense stars in the League. For Justin to take the next step in his development he needs to be more consistent – especially in his own zone. He’s prone to extended periods of lackluster play but he’s still relatively young and I certainly wouldn’t want him moved unless a young top 3 forward and a depth player comes the other way.
