I am away and caught only the second half of the third period and will not catch up on the DVR until at least after dinner on Wednesday.
So it’s time for a crowd-sourced recap of Canes game #80.
Who can tell me what happened?

I didn’t catch all of the game, but the portions I saw were high speed interesting portions.
It is hard sometimes to watch a Tim Peel refereed game because of our astounding lack of success in important games where he wears the orange armband. It is the motivation for playing FMUTIS, you can’t get injured by being boarded with no call or penalized in the O zone if you shoot the puck within 2 seconds of crossing the blue line.
The deterioration of the structure of the game makes “advanced statistics” like Corsi, an estimate of possession based on SOGs, completely irrelevant and wrong. The breakdown of the statistics and structure is complete.
Add to that a Florida team looking to knock the heads off of a “candy canes” team who know they can do it without penalty and you have a game where Roland McKeown tries to fight, at least until he gets a good contract.
This league and team need to restore their integrity. If and when Peel does his thing, “red dog” him. Feed him a puck. And beat the snot out of the guy he was “helping”.
I think we need some grit until the biased referees use their bias to protect their favored players instead of helping them.
If we won’t protect our players, why should they?
End rant. The guys played with heart and played pretty well, given the circumstances.
I do not know if you remember a few years back there was a ref named Magoo. He was absolutely worthless. I feel the same way about Peel. I wish the NHL would fire him. He is just ridiculous.
A highly annoying game IMO. Seemed to me that the ‘Canes were outplayed for most of the game – especially in the energy department. Continued sloppy puck control across the board, and allowing the Panthers free access to the offensive zone, and not converting premium scoring opportunities. A quite confusing boarding/no boarding call resulting in McGinn to the locker room and McKeown in the box for an absorbent amount of time.
The main player themes of the night for me…
Darling showing the inconsistency that makes him a backup goalie.
Derek Ryan showing up too late trying to get his next contract.
Usual suspects showed up with good efforts (Slavin, Staal, Williams, McGinn, TVR)
Unusually quiet evening for the Teuvo, Aho, Zykov line.
Best line of the evening McGinn, Staal, Williams.
Bottom line…don’t waste your time. You’ve seen this game before.
Well said!
In other news, looks like we are closing in on securing the 10th, 11th or 12th pick in the upcoming draft. NYR 3pts back with game in hand. Calgary 1pt point ahead with game in hand. Guessing we stay at 11th unless the lottery shakes up the order.
The team lost. 🙁
Truly a disappointing loss but we did get to see one of the best shifts all season by the TAZ line, even if it didn’t result in a goal.
The sad things is we are not that far away from being very competitive. Aho misses an open net, Staal does not finish on a break away. He is an elite two way player and I definitely want him on the team, very important player, but just lacks that finishing. We just always seem to do enough to loose. A couple of things different and we win the game. I thought they competed but gave it up right towards the end of the game. Its always something. Yup, 11th pick.
We have an impatient owner and that is what gives me hope. Our list for needs are the same as we had at the end of the season last year. Disappointed RF did not try to do something. His conservatism cost him hos jib.
