Go Canes!
Funny how my opinion differs from a lot of the majority answers on here (but I don’t claim any expert or inside knowledge).
Pit is talking about buying out Brock McGinn, he played poorly throughout the season, even worse in the playoffs. I don’t want to be stuck with that contract (granted I’d rather have resigned him than Martinook)
Ditto with Mrazek, the Leafs are discussing how to bury his contract after a massive disappointment of a season.
Josh Leivo has been dazzling in the AHL, I would expect him to get more of an extended look next season. Either way, it’s a very low risk/ok rewards signing, so I don’t see how the team did badly there.
I see absolutley on rhyme or reason behind the whole Jesperi Kotkaniemi business. He’s done very little to impress in the regular season, much less so in the playoffs. He’s taking up valuable cap space for which we could’ve sign a big difference maker for the deadline. Sure, he’s young, he can grow into a very serviceable third line center, kind of a poor man’s Jordan Staal but at 6 mill contract I think that’s not exactly what I’d call value for money.
I’d call Tony DeAngelo the best value for money signing in the leage this year .. one mill with all those points, dollar per point value is pretty high on that one. Yes, he disappoined in the playoffs but so did the whole team. I just don’t see how the PP could’ve got anything going without him.
On the flipside, Ian Cole is a good guy but I’d say pretty expensive for the value he brings as a bottom pairing defenseman. That overtime goal in the playoffs was pretty neat though.
Trading Warren Foegele for Ethan Bear looks approx even Steven. The players failed to impress.
I think our goaltending was surely the most iproved position. I’d say the d took a tiny step backward, though mostly the same. I really don’t see how our forward group improved through trades and acquisitions. None of the newcomers we signed made a significant scoring contribution .. most of that came from players taking a step, or at least half step, forward in their development.
That being said, leading the league in GA during the regular season is pretty impressive, an a lot of that is on D and goalies, so maybe I under-estimate the D.
