With a home-heavy stretch of schedule that started at the beginning of November behind the Canes, the team takes to the road for 4 straight and generally sees a more regular helping of road games for the rest of December.

Here are a few keys to winning on the road right now:

1) Better goaltending

The Canes mostly struggled in net whether it was Cam Ward or Eddie Lack. To beat some good teams out West, the Canes will need to get more from their goalies.

2) Continued scoring from Jordan Staal’s line

At home in a checking role, it might have been enough to just hold the other team’s scoring lines down. They did this and actually scored some too. The scoring part becomes even more important on the road where the opposing team’s coach will likely steer his scoring lines away from Jordan Staal. This makes it even more important that they score some since they will get a lesser role defensively.

3) Timely scoring

There are a million ways that you can break down both the good and the bad of the Hurricanes so far this season, but a very simple level, the Canes generally win when they find the back of the net.

4) Sound D from the kid D pairing

Just like with the Jordan Staal line situation, Coach Bill Peters loses the ability to dictate match ups. For Jordan Staal’s line it actually means easier match ups, but I would expect opposing coaches to try to challenge the young Hanifin/Slavin pairing. With some run time together, is this duo ready to hold their own with less shelter and against tougher match ups?

The road trip kicks off in Dallas on Tuesday night on Fox with John, Tripp and Michelle.

Go Canes!
