Thursday Coffee Shop: Coming out of the Tuesday debacle and looking forward

Thursday Coffee Shop: Coming out of the Tuesday debacle and looking forward

Deservedly so, the Hurricanes game on Tuesday has created quite a commotion among the fan base. The 8-1 whooping at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs was obviously not the outcome that anyone hoped for if they managed to free up part of their afternoon to watch the odd 2pm matinee. Today’s Daily Cup of Joe offers some context for the game, and today’s Daily Cup of Joe will also bandy it around one more time before another game hopefully gives everyone the opportunity to move forward.   Carolina Hurricanes polls Please remember to click ‘vote’ after each individual poll response.   What are your thoughts on the Hurricanes 8-1 loss on Tuesday? (Select up to 3.) As bad as it was, it is just one game and not a big deal. The game is significant in that it points to bigger problems in terms of preparation and every-game readiness. The loss should be the straw that broke the camel's back for a coaching change. A game like this sits very squarely on the leadership of the team. This could be the capitulation game for a complete reset at the goalie position that sees Ward become the #1. Just inexcusable. Details past that are unnecessary. Other (add in comments) View Results  Loading ...   Who do you hold most accountable for Tuesday's loss? Scott Darling. He gave the team no chance to play its way into the game. Bill Peters. It is his responsibility to have the team ready. The captains and leaders. It is their responsibility to set a tone. The schedule and odd 2pm start. The...
Monday Coffee Shop: Assessing the #CanesCoaster that is the 2017-18 season

Monday Coffee Shop: Assessing the #CanesCoaster that is the 2017-18 season

Today’s Daily Cup of Joe looks at six young players who have had fits of greatness but also bouts of lesser play and considers whether those players are on the brink of putting it all together or just destined to offer sporadic bursts of goodness amid inconsistency. The Monday Coffee Shop takes on a similar theme but more at a team level.   Carolina Hurricane polls Please remember to click ‘vote’ after each individual poll response.   What do you make of the Hurricanes current three-game winning streak? (Select as many as apply.) The streak represents a turning point in the 2017-18 season a key part in seizing a playoff berth. The streak is just another random up for the 2017-18 season and destined to be offset by another down. Because of how the team won the three games, the streak represents a step in the direction of building a winning mindset and mentality. Though positive, the three wins just are not enough as the team will continue treading water/taking one step forward and then one step back. Other (add in comments) View Results  Loading ...   Based on what you have seen thus far, what do you expect from the remainder of the 2017-18 season? Similar to 2017-18 thus far and also 2016-17 -- Ups and downs during the learning process and no playoffs. Mostly ups and downs but enough up to squeak into the playoffs. This team will ultimately put it together, rise up the standings and push above the playoff cut line and higher. This team just is not good and is destined to finish near...
Thursday Coffee Shop: Holiday gift list

Thursday Coffee Shop: Holiday gift list

With the holidays end of year approaching, we are continuing our combination holiday sale/year end fundraiser. If you are a regular reader of Canes and Coffee and appreciate what we do, please consider a Canes and Coffee cup (if you want one) or otherwise a small $5-10 donation to help fund our mission at Canes and Coffee to provide local, daily coverage of our hockey team. $18.75 in state or $17.50 out of state (sales tax difference) nets you a coffee cup. Small, simple donations are also appreciated. It’s as simple as making a credit card or PayPal contribution by clicking on the PayPal link HERE and being sure to include your mailing address if you order a coffee cup.   With the busy holiday season upon us and most people working on gift lists and shopping, the Thursday Coffee Shop will take on a mostly lighthearted holiday shopping theme.   Carolina Hurricanes polls Please remember to click ‘vote’ after each individual poll response.   If you could have only one Carolina Hurricanes gift for the holiday season, what would it be? An announcement that the sale of the team to Tom Dundon is officially completed finally putting that long-running saga in the rear view mirror. A 3-game winning streak over the holidays that brings joy to PNC Arena and concludes with a lopsided win over the Pens that quiets the visiting contingent. An at least medium trade that sends a clear message heading into the new year that this team is very clearly aiming to make the 2018 playoffs. A BIG gift card for The Eye that sets off...

The Daily Cup of Joe is a companion article that shares my thoughts on the same subject, but I hope everyone votes/comments here first so that we get unbiased opinions and the diversity of viewpoints that is easily the best thing about Canes and Coffee articles right now. With that…The 2017-18 Carolina Hurricanes…Where are we? Where are we going?   Carolina Hurricanes polls Please remember to click ‘vote’ after each individual poll response.   Through one-third of the season, how do the 2017-18 Carolina Hurricanes compare to what you expected entering the season? The team is outperforming my preseason expectations. The team is doing about as I would have expected. The team is underperforming my preseason expectations. Thursday Coffee Shop: Ownership rumblings and a sense of urgency on the ice

Thursday Coffee Shop: Ownership rumblings and a sense of urgency on the ice

With the NHL Board of Governors meeting today, I held off on posting the Thursday Coffee Shop in hopes that we might have something substantive to discuss coming out of those meetings. That has happened, but the official news and details are a bit slow coming, so Friday or possibly even later might be the better time to bandy around details. But by no means should that prevent or regularly scheduled chat about Canes hockey over coffee as happens here every Thursday. I will possibly add another poll or question for ongoing debate on Friday if/when more details emerge.   Carolina Hurricanes poll questions Please remember to click ‘vote’ after each individual poll response.   What is your initial reaction to the fairly sudden progress on selling the team to Tom Dundon? (Choose as many as apply.) I am surprised at how quickly things seemed to move once news was out about a new suitor. The Board of Governors meeting timing makes a lot of sense. I am just happy that something has happened such that we can move forward into the next era of Hurricanes hockey. I think Chuck Greenberg was a better fit for what the franchise needs. Other (add in comments) View Results  Loading ...   What will be most interesting in the details to follow? (Choose as many as apply.) What Karmanos' role is going forward. Any early clues from Dundon in terms of changes in how the team will be run on and off the ice. Specific comments on the relocation rumblings that just will not go away. Seeing what Dundon's first impression/move is...
Monday Coffee Shop: The “road” ahead

Monday Coffee Shop: The “road” ahead

We are at that time of year, when it would be great to pull in a few $ to sort of catch up for 2017 financially and have at least a little bit extra (which will be put to good use) heading into 2018. Plus if you hurry, you can have your new coffee cup in time for most of the coming run of 10pm TV starts out west. If you have no use for another coffee cup, please consider a simple one-time $5-10 one-time contribution. Everything helps. To receive a Canes and Coffee coffee cup and equally significantly support our local, daily Carolina Hurricanes hockey coverage, simply… 1) Contribute either $17.50 (out of state=>no sales tax) or $18.75 (in state=sales tax) via credit card or PayPal. 2) Make sure you include your mailing address in the payment notes. 3) Help support Canes and Coffee and get a cool coffee cup in the process. Go HERE and click on the PayPal link at the bottom of the page.   After a couple of great weeks of hockey in mid-November, the Hurricanes have taken a small step back the past two weeks. The team’s 1-2 mark in three home games during Thanksgiving week was obviously sub-par. The team’s 1-1-1 mark last week was more of the treading water variety. Before the start of the Thanksgiving week home stand, I wrote about the importance of the next two legs of the 2017-18 season in terms of deciding the Hurricanes’ level of success. As noted above, the first leg, the short home stand, was a downer with a 1-2 record. The second...
