On Thursday, Carolina Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis jumped out of the gate early trading Ron Hainsey to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a second round draft pick and veteran AHL forward Danny Kristo. With the trade deadline set for 3pm on Wednesday, the hockey world is buzzing, and it should only increase as we work out way to Wednesday.

As such, it should be no surprise that this week’s helping of reading from around the internet is heavy on trade chatter.

The broader NHL – NHL players expected to be traded

To get the skinny on the most significant players likely to be on the move, check out Sportsnet’s most recent TradeCentre update.

To get an idea of the teams most likely to be bidding to gain the services of the Hurricanes’ impending unrestricted free agents who could be on the block, see Lyle Richardson’s list of the top 9 buyers at bleacher report.

Lyle Richardson at The Hockey News throws some cold water on the festivities suggesting that the 2017 NHL trade deadline could be a dud.

Closer to home – The Carolina Hurricanes trade deadline

Even before the Ron Hainsey deal, Andrew Schnittker from the Technician had the Hurricanes pegged as sellers at the deadline.

Matthew Barlowe at Fansided’s Cardiac Cane suggests that the Hurricanes need another top center and goes so far as to target someone not named Matt Duchene.

Matt from Calm Before the Storm thinks that Derek Ryan could be the next Canes player on the move.

Sticking with the “Canes hockey coverage from guys named Matt” theme, the Carolina Hurricanes trade deadline coverage is well underway at Canes and Coffee. If you missed it last week:

“Part 1: The for sale list with expected values” identified the Hurricanes most likely to be moved including Ron Hainsey who was gone a few hours later.

“Part 2: Building the 2017-18 blue line” went a different direction (with some objection from knowledgeable readers) and suggested that the Hurricanes could actually add a defenseman before the start of the 2017-18 season.

Part 3 should be up either Sunday night or otherwise sometime on Monday.

Different angles on the Ron Hainsey trade

Canes and Coffee offered its thoughts on the Ron Hainsey trade on multiple levels shortly after the deal was announced.

Brett Finger from Canes Country thinks that Ron Hainsey’s departure could be a positive for the Hurricanes young blue line core.

In dueling article mode, Kevin LeBlanc from Canes Country says similar but hones in on the benefits for Noah Hanifin.

On the incoming side, Ryan Wilson at Hockeybuzz offers a detailed assessment of Hainsey and how he fits into Pittsburgh’s situation.

If you missed it with the nice weather – Canes and Coffee’s “Local Hockey Saturday”

First thing Saturday morning, Canes and Coffee ran a series of 3 articles that tell great stories about local hockey on 3 different levels far below the NHL level.

The first article detailed the Junior Hurricanes Pee Wee team and their play in Quebec against the world’s best.

The second article recapped NC State Hockey’s season that built to a strong conclusion after a tough first half mired in injuries and some adversity.

Finally, a third article offered a chronological look at UNC’s 2016-17 season that saw steady improvement.

Go Canes!
