Friday was a busy off day for the Hurricanes full of everyday hockey transactions. First, the team placed Justin Faulk on injured reserve. Then the team sent Phil Di Giuseppe to Charlotte and also placed Jakub Nakladal on waivers with the intent to do the same. Then the team back filled 2 of those slots by recalling Brock McGinn and Derek Ryan.

Then suddenly the Hurricanes announced that Bryan Bickell had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Suddenly hockey transactions seemed irrelevant in the bigger picture of life.

The news hit hard and dropped everyone’s spirits, but a tiny silver lining in it is how it demonstrates how the NHL and its fans really are a community at their core.
