Now one week past the Carolina Hurricanes prospect camp and a couple weeks past the opening of free agency, the doldrums of the long hockey offseason are upon us. But surprisingly the past week was a reasonably busy one in terms of both local and national Hurricanes coverage and even some real news.

This week’s Canes Chronicle is an interesting grab bag of all kinds:

From national sources

I think most people saw this, but Cam Ward’s The Players’ Tribune article is a must read that is worth noting here in case anyone missed it.

Ryan Kennedy from the The Hockey News had complimentary things to say about Francis’ rebuilding efforts thus far. The article has a puzzling ending that suggests the Hurricanes could trade a couple of the young defensemen to Boston for 30-year old David Krejci and the 5 years remaining on his contract at $7.25 million per year. Krejci is a good player and if I needed to build a team only for 2016-17, I would be happy to have him on the roster. But adding a player at his age and contract risk at the expense of a couple good young inexpensive players goes against everything that Kennedy said that Francis was doing well in the first half of the article. I would be shocked to see a deal like this.

Tom Gulitti from NHL.com offered this good mid-summer assessment of the Hurricanes.

Brief former Hurricane Patrick O’Sullivan and Steve Kouleas’ XM Radio show had a 15-minute interview with Bill Peters that offered some insight into his desired style of play and expected 2016-17 top 9 for forwards.

From local sources

Ben Pope at the News & Observer wrote about up-and-coming Canes netminder prospect Alex Nedeljkovic.

Michael Smith from the team’s web site has an article about Julien Gauthier that includes some quotes from Coach Bill Peters. Note: I usually do not link to much from the team’s official site simply because I figure most people are already stopping by there fairly regularly.

Section 328 offers a last chance to catch the podcast before their end of summer hiatus to rest up for another hockey season in the fall.

Jonathan Wagner from Canes Chatter offers a positive mid-summer ‘state of the Canes’.

CandC coverage of week’s 2 news events

In addition to more general coverage this week both local and national, the Hurricanes actually had some real news with Ron Francis wrapping up his restricted free agent signings in one big flurry of activity on Wednesday.

HERE I wrote about the re-signing of Brody Sutter, Brendan Woods, Dennis Robertson and Keegan Lowe.

HERE I wrote about the re-signing of Ryan Murphy that happened later the same day.

Go Canes!
